Compaq’s Brand Character is ‘Qool’

Indonesia man wins competition

HP today announced the winner of an Asia Pacific-wide competition held to raise awareness of its recently revitalized Compaq brand. As part of the brand campaign, visitors to the microsite could enter a competition to name the Compaq brand character or ‘Stickman’. The winning name for the Compaq ‘Stickman’ is ‘Qool’, submitted by Andy Santoso from Jakarta, Indonesia.

Since its launch in May this year, the online brand campaign generated 47 million banner impressions and over one million downloads. The site attracted 66,000 unique visitors and over 70,000 visitors linked through to the Compaq Presario Notebook Product Category Pages through the competition microsite.

Dennis Mark, vice president, Marketing, Personal Systems Group (PSG), Asia-Pacific and Japan said: “The new sleek and bold look of the Compaq brand underscores the ‘simple and value’ proposition of the Compaq brand. We wanted to give the brand a creative personality and naming the stickman icon was one way to do this. As such, we were looking for a name that is uniquely Compaq, fresh and easily understood across our diverse region while injecting a ‘fun’ element. Mr. Santoso’s entry encompasses all of these elements.”

The winning entry was selected out of more than 620 submissions. Mr. Santoso said: “I’m delighted to win this competition. I already use a Compaq Presario in the office and find that the brand and the products are really ‘cool’ to start with. From there, it was easy to derive the name of ‘Qool’ for the stickman since the new Compaq logo looks like a ‘Q’. I’m very excited to be receiving a newer Compaq notebook so I can use at home as well.”

The prize-giving ceremony will take place in Jakarta, Indonesia where Mariana Kasim, Marketing Director, HP Indonesia will present Mr. Santoso with a Compaq Presario v3500 series notebook PC.

All entries were submitted online and reviewed by a judging panel that comprised of senior HP & Compaq representatives. The online contest took place across 11 countries/regions from 18 May to 18 July 2007. The contest was open to people living in Australia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.

The new look Compaq brand was first announced in May this year along with two new Compaq Presario notebook PCs. The new sleek and bold look of the Compaq brand featuring the new CQ logo underscores the ‘simple and value’ proposition of the Compaq brand. The new products and new-look brand are in line with HP’s promise to deliver simple, no fuss and easy to use computing experience by resonating more closely with its customers. The refreshed Compaq Presario brand will complement the HP Pavilion brand, maximizing choice for consumers and meeting the needs of different customer segments.
